TURNING RED DEAD REDEMPTION'S HONOR SYSTEM INTO FASHION

How Red Dead Redemption 2's High and Low Honor system inspired contrasting artwork, Western motifs and the visual world behind Bijon Projects' Outlaw Collection.

TURNING RED DEAD REDEMPTION'S HONOR SYSTEM INTO FASHION

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game built around choices.

Arthur Morgan exists within a world of outlaws, violence and survival, but the player is constantly given opportunities to decide what kind of person he becomes. Help someone or take advantage of them. Show mercy or choose violence. Give something back or take more for yourself.

These decisions form the game's Honor system, shifting Arthur between High Honor and Low Honor depending on how the player moves through the world.

For Bijon Projects' Outlaw Collection, that contrast became one of the foundations of the collection.

Rather than simply recreating cowboy clothing, we explored how the morality system of Red Dead Redemption 2, together with the wider visual language of the American West, could be reinterpreted through everyday garments.

HIGH HONOR VS LOW HONOR

At the centre of the collection is the idea that the same situation can produce two completely different outcomes.

This is most directly represented through the artwork used on the High Honor and Low Honor pieces.

On the High Honor chest pocket artwork, an outlaw comes across a vendor after a wagon crash and helps him back to his feet.

The Low Honor version begins with the exact same scenario.

This time, the outlaw robs him instead.

By showing two versions of one encounter, the artwork turns the game's morality system into something visual. The difference between High and Low Honor is not simply a different colour or symbol. It is a different decision.

That contrast became a recurring idea throughout the Outlaw Collection.

THE OUTLAW DENIM MOTIF JEANS

The Outlaw Denim Motif Jeans translate the Honor system through colour and pattern.

Two geometric motifs sit across the knees: blue representing High Honor and red representing Low Honor.

The shapes themselves draw inspiration from geometric patterns found in historical Navajo weaving and Western saddle blankets. Rather than directly using the Honor icons from the game, we wanted the motifs to feel as though they belonged naturally within the wider visual world of the American West.

The result combines two sources of inspiration.

The colours communicate the morality system of Red Dead Redemption 2, while the geometric construction references textiles associated with the Western setting that helped shape the collection.

For someone familiar with the game, the contrast between red and blue carries another meaning.

For someone who is not, the motifs can simply exist as part of the jeans.

THE OUTLAW MOHAIR SWEATER

Not every reference in the collection came directly from the game itself.

The contrasting silhouette artwork on the Outlaw Mohair Sweater was inspired by vintage Western movie posters.

Western films have long used strong silhouettes to communicate a character before showing much detail: a cowboy hat, a horse, a gun or a lone figure against a landscape.

That visual language helped shape the world that games such as Red Dead Redemption would later reinterpret.

The sweater draws from that history rather than recreating a particular Arthur Morgan outfit or scene.

This became another way of approaching fictional world inspired clothing.

Sometimes the reference comes directly from a character or story.

Other times, it comes from the visual history that helped build that fictional world in the first place.

BUILDING THE WORLD AROUND THE STORY

Some pieces within Outlaw were intentionally more aesthetic.

The Cherry pieces, for example, were not designed around a particular scene or game mechanic. Instead, they helped expand the colour, styling and wider Western identity of the collection.

Not every garment needs to carry a hidden narrative.

Some exist to make the collection feel like a complete wardrobe.

This balance allowed Outlaw to move between direct Red Dead Redemption references and a broader interpretation of Western inspired fashion.

The Honor system provided the concept.

The American West provided the visual vocabulary around it.

FROM GAME MECHANIC TO GARMENT

The Outlaw Collection was never intended to simply recreate clothing from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Instead, different parts of the game's world were translated in different ways.

The Honor system became contrasting scenarios and colours.

High and Low Honor became the blue and red motifs on the Outlaw Denim Jeans.

Historical Western textiles influenced their geometric language.

Vintage movie posters inspired the silhouette artwork of the Mohair Sweater.

Other pieces helped build out the wider wardrobe and atmosphere surrounding the collection.

Together, these references allowed us to explore Red Dead Redemption inspired fashion without relying on costume recreation or obvious character graphics.

The connection to the game is there, but the garments are designed to exist beyond it.

That is ultimately what interested us most about the world of Red Dead Redemption.

It is not only the image of the outlaw that makes the story memorable.

It is the question of what kind of outlaw you decide to become.
